The Gortani Museum
The Paleontological Museum “Michele Gortani” was founded by a group of scholars and researchers of Portogruaro as well as by centres from both Veneto and Friuli and was inaugurated on Nov. 14th, 1976. The Municipality made two rooms available to the enthusiasts, in the Municipal Villa, and subsequently throughout the years the museum was enriched with many other findings. Today it occupies a large salon with numerous showcases preserving around 1500 exhibits. Most of them are fossils, shown in chronological order, which recount the evolutionary processes which took place from the Palaeozoic up to the appearance of the human race: a story half a billion years long.
