The Bridge of the Mills

The Bridge Of The Mills, or Saint Andrea Bridge, is the only one of the many 16th century bridges in the historical centre to have survived the bombing of the First World War. We can admire on it an important memorial tablet, dated 1554, which remembers the “podestà” Giulio Valier. In the mid 16th century he rebuilt the bridge and placed upon it the inscription celebrating the undertaking and completed with the St. Mark’s lion, symbol of the Serenissima and its power in the town and the territory. The ancient lion was then destroyed by Napoleon’s armies at the end of the 18th century. Recently FAI (Italian National Trust Fund), in agreement with the municipal authority, and in memory of the original statue, has replaced it with a copy of the winged lion executed by the contemporary sculptor Roberto Rocchi.
