Banks (called at that time Banchi)

In a town of traders, where the availability of money was important and where negotiations were held and deals concluded, the “banchi” were obviously fundamental, forefathers in fact of our modern financial institutions. In the main square of the town, today Piazza della Repubblica, there was in a palazzo, later demolished, the banco belonging to a Venetian family , the Soranzos. In Corso Martiri della Libertà, at street No. 30, the palazzo with wooden entablature supported by classical columns, hosted the banco Pisani, a kind of branch of the Venetian banco, which had its seat at Rialto. Other important structures allowing currency to move around and liquid assets to be available, were the Jewish pawnbroker’s and, from 1668 onwards, the pawnshop promoted by the Municipality.
