The excavations in Concordia
The sarcophagus of Vassione has a special significance for the museum. It is in fact connected to the circumstances of the excavations, which began at the beginning of the 19th century. Its discovery, absolutely incidental, in 1873 to the east of Concordia, gave rise to a campaign of excavations, lead by Dario Bertolini, who brought to light dozens of burials belonging to a necropolis called “graveyard of the soldiers”, since several tombs were those of soldiers. In order to preserve the numerous inscriptions recovered from the sarcophaguses, the museum was realized and was progressively, over the years, enriched with finds which came to light in Concordia and in its territory.
