The River Lemene

The town of Portogruaro was founded on the banks of the River Lemene. The river itself finds its origin in the resurgence area between S.Vito al Tagliamento and Casarsa. The irrigation channel Versa, enriched by other channels, near a place called Bagnarola, changes its name into “Lemene”, which then flows towards Portogruaro passing through Cintello and Portovecchio. In Portogruaro the Lemene receives more water from the irrigation channel Versiola as well as from the River Reghena. The first time that this river is quoted with its present name (it is the first and only testimony traced so far)dates back to 996. It concerns a diploma by Ottone the 3rd, dedicated to the bishop of Concordia, Bennone, which sanctions the recognition of the Bishopric of Concordia, including a forest marking the boundary on one side by the rivers Meduna, Fiume and Livenza, and, on the other, by the “aquaquevocaturLemen” (the water called Lemene).
